Abstract: A key function of the brain is to represent the environment as accurately or as realistically as possible, so that it can engage appropriate interactions with it. Evidence shows that older human brains make decisions that reflect a different representation of environmental ground truths compared to their younger counterparts. In our lab, we have examined this in terms of basic probabilistic value-based decision processing as well as complex non-linear decisions in young and older adults and interrogated the initial underlying neural correlates — older brains predict outcomes using a much different neural circuitry compared to younger brains. In this talk, I will consider how such findings suggest to us that, apart from biological decline, the older brain harbors hypotheses about how the environment works that are quite distinct from that in their younger counterparts and I will review how we are busy refining, evaluating, and using this theory in recent ongoing works.
